Empowering Learners Through Experiential Education
Growing up in Italy, Maria Montessori never let the status quo limit her imagination or desire to innovate and make discoveries. As a thirteen-year-old girl, she decided to pursue engineering and enrolled in an all-boys technical school.
Her confidence and intelligence guided her through her time there and led to her future as an Italian physician with a focus on psychology and psychiatry. As she continued to learn, she developed an interest in education and became involved with special education programs.

Fun Fact
Maria Montessori was one of the first female doctors in Italy.
Years later, in 1907, Maria was challenged to open a day care in an underprivileged area of Rome. As the facility got started, she found the children to be out of control. While she tried to bring order to the chaos, she noticed that the students had an interest in learning skills that involved hands-on experiences. She decided to lean into this strength and began experimenting with applicable activities like cooking.
Through these lessons, she discovered that the children were beginning to self-regulate their actions. They enjoyed having input into their education and were eager to learn when they were active participants. This method, later known as the Montessori Method, became a powerful philosophy that is still used worldwide today.
At its core is the principle that children make rapid educational progress in an environment that encourages their autonomy to make decisions and provides them with the chance to engage in collaborative play.
